SCALING AND ROOT PLANING
Scaling and Root Planing is part of initial therapy and is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. Root planning and scaling cleans between the gums and the teeth down to the roots. Your dentist or hygienist may need to use a local anesthetic to numb your gums and the roots of your teeth. Following scaling and root planning, an antibiotic or antimicrobial irrigation is often placed or used in the gum pockets. These medications promote fast and healthy healing in the pockets and help ease discomfort

SPECIALTY: PERIODONTICS
If your condition is too advanced or there is no improvement after initial therapy, you will be advised to see a periodontist. Most periodontist spend the majority of their time diagnosing and treating gum disease. Treatments to treat gum disease includes: nonsurgical and surgical therapies. Gum surgery is required when the depth of periodontal pockets remains over 4 mm after the initial treatments. Regular brushing and flossing cannot remove plaque and bacteria from deep inside these pockets making it difficult to maintain the health of the gums and teeth. Periodontal gum surgery treatments can eliminate or reduce periodontal pockets providing a better maintainable environment. Periodontist can also perform a variety of procedures to treat gum recession and cover up exposed root surfaces which can be unsightly as well as sensitive to hot and cold. These procedures are often used to lay the foundation for additional cosmetic procedures to help create a beautiful smile. Periodontist can also place dental implants when natural teeth cannot be saved. They also monitor the implants to make sure that they’re properly doing their job. Finally, periodontists can be integral in the comprehensive planning of your oral care, along with your general dentist or other dental professional.
